Small Child, Ear Itching, Irritation, White Formation On Eardrum. CT Scan Requested. Treatment?
My daugter is 5 years old. She was complaining about ear itching and irritation for last two weeks. we took her to an ENT yesterday. Doc said that there is a white formation above the eardrum . it needs to be CT scanned and if the infection has affected bones inside - a major surgery would be required. can you please explain to me what is this?
An ear infection which persists for 2 weeks needs further questioning. Was there any associated ear discharge ? If there was minimal ear discharge which was foul smelling it probably indicates chronic otitis media which definitely requires a CT evaluation. If the child cries in pain and there is profuse discharge it indicates acute otitis media which can be controlled with medication. The ENT specialist certainly feels this is a serious problem and a CT is justified. The decision on surgery can be taken once the report is ready.
Take care.
Hi
Thanks for your query.
There is white pus formation above the eardrum that may be due to infection in the mastoid. Thats why your doctor asks for a CT scan to confirm the mastoid involvement. Because if mastoid is involved then operation is to be done to open the mastoid to clear the source of chronic infection to prevent further relapses.
So do the CT scan urgently as per your doctor's advice.
Thank you.
