Started Vomiting, On And Off Diarrhea, Lost Appetite, Unable To Diagnose. What To Do ?
My 10 year old son started vomiting last Saturday night, 4 episodes in total, ending Sunday. Has had on & off diarrhea all week, some nausea all week off & on. Hasn't been eating or drinking much because of those symptoms. This evening he again became nauseated, has had diarrhea & feels like he needs to vomit, but can't bring anything up. His temp is 95.7.
Your child seems to have gastroenteritis. Monitor for signs of dehydration. They include 1. Decreased skin turgor 2. Increasing thirst. 3. Sunken eyes. 4. Irritability. 5. Drowsiness. 6. Decreasing passage of urine. Oral rehydration solution or any other solution containing salt and sugar should be given. Probiotics and Zinc prescribed by your doctor will be useful.
Regarding vomiting antiemetics as prescribed by your doctor may be required.
If there is fever with blood or mucus in the stool antibiotics may be required.
In case of further dehydration the child requires Intravenous fluids.
Continue to ask further queries as required. Hope this helps. Take care. Dr Y V Siva Sankara Murty M.D.(Pediatrics) Associate Professor of Pediatrics
