Stiff Index Finger, Painful To Bend. History Of Laceration To Back Of The Finger. Damged Knuckle Joint?

A few months ago, I had a blunt force induced laceration to the back of my index finger at the knuckle (second from the fingertip). The laceration healed normally, but the finger is exceptionally stiff at that joint and painful to bend very far. I've begun trying to bend it further by force, slowly, but there seems to be little improvement. Have I damaged the knuckle joint itself, or the attaching soft tissue? I wouldn't care much about it except that it's on my left hand and I was, before this, a fairly exceptional guitarist but since the injury I'm unable to play at all. Is this likely to require surgery, or will the simple exercise I've begun restore it to close to it's former mobility?

The damage done to the interphalangeal joint is unlikely to go away> The stiffness will come down to some extent over the next few months but will not go away completely. This occurs due to scar tissue formation at the joint .You need to see a hand surgeon who can examine you and guide you on the probability of recovery after surgery.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. Saurabh Gupta's  Response
Hello,
Thanks for writing to us.
Stiffness in your finger could be due to injury of knucle joint or due to soft tissue contracture around the joint. If it would not correct with exercises, you might require surgery. Consult your doctor for proper examination.
Hope this helps you.
Wishing you good health...
Regards.
Dr Saurabh Gupta.
