Suffer From Subdural Hematoma After A Fall. One Leg Is Weaker Than The Other. Is Air Travel Safe?
83 year old mother in law with subdural haematoma after falling backwards down 5 flights of stairs...April 10, 2013. Had to be air vac. from DeWitt to Iowa City. Currently in rehab. in Davenport, IA for walking and speech. One leg is weaker than the other. Must have 2 attendants at all times when going to the bathroom. Has fallen twice due to full imbalance. Was supposed to be discharged from rehab. hospital by end of this week, however, now the new discharge date is May 30 if things go well. When is it okay for patient to get on an airplane and travel? Her grand daughter's wedding is June 29, month and a half away. Travel would be from Iowa to Hawaii (15 hours).
I understand your concerns for your mother in law. I wonder if you should be seeking the care of an expert who specializes in neurological disorders since her condition has been worsening with the subdural hematoma (hopefully it was evacuated with a burr hole) and she needs to be followed up with regular physician appointments to assess her situation. If you insurance allows it I am thinking that a long term care facility may be the best for her before a step up or step down to palliative care or home health respectively. I would not recommend travel to Hawaii, especially with all that has been going on. I hope this helps.
Take care and have a lovely day!
