Suggest A Diet For Hiatus Hernia

I am been diagnosed with Hiatus hernia and I always feel some or the other anxiety in my stomach everyday even though I am taking medicines. I would like to know what sort of eating habits should I follow since I am a bachelor and have to eat out everyday?

Hello Sir,
You can follow the GERD Diet or Gastrointestinal Esophageal Reflux Disease Diet, Foods to be Avoided: Peppermint, chocolate, alcohol, caffeine, pepper, high fat foods and any specific fruits or vegetables - for some it is tomatoes or citrus. Stay away from fried foods, a challenge for a bachelor eating out. Just do it. Choose lean meats, stay away from cheese except mozzarella. Avoid carbonation, let it go flat.

Lifestyle Suggestions: Exercise 3-4x per week; wear loose fitting clothes; do not smoke; raise the head of your bed 6 inches, use a foam wedge as cheapest alternative; do not lay down until 3 hours after you eat; don't eat until full as it puts pressure on the valve between the stomach and the esophagus, so eat 6 small meals per day.

I hope I have answered your concerns. Come back and see me if I can be of any more help. Kathryn Shattler, MS,RDN
