Suggest Treatment For Constipation Developed After Hernia Surgery

I recently had surgery for a hernia and have been very constipated the 3 following days. Today my stomach began to get bloated to the point of not being able to walk. I have been eating a lot of fiber trying to aid in a bowel movement but have not had much luck. Do I need to be eating more food overall? I have not been hungry lately because of stomach pains.. was wondering what else I could do to help get 'regular' again

Hello,

No need to eat extra food. Hypokalemia induced paralytic ileus is very common after abdominal surgeries. And this in turn causes constipation. So in my opinion, you should definitely get done serum potassium levels and if low then You should start oral potassium supplements.

Also get done ultrasound examination of abdomen to rule out any post operative complication. If everything is normal then no need to worry, your constipation will mostly subside in 1 week time. You are can also take laxative like Lectulose syrup temporarily.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
