Suggest Treatment For Constipation

Hello, im 18 years old and weigh 180 pounds. I haven't gone to the bathroom in over a week and I'm not sure why. I suffer from terrible, unbearable constipation and I dont know what to do. I eat fiber one cereals as well as the bars. I have a fiber one bar a day, and it seemed to trigger my stomach for a while, but then my system just gets used to the fiber and nothing happens. Everytime i find something that works for me, a few weeks later my system gets used to the food or product and im stuck with terrible constipation again! I drink plenty of water and eat prunes (but they stopped workin a while ago). PLEASE help!

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain it seems that you are suffering from Chronic Constipation and it can be due to causes like excess intake of antacids, side effetcs of medications [if you take any],laxative abuse, irritable bowel syndrome, excess intake of dairy, eating disorders, lack of appropriate physical activity, side effects of medicines, Hypothyroidism, disorders related to nerves and muscles of digestive tract leading to its weakening etc..

I would suggest you to consult a Gastroenterologist and get evaluated and he can advise you get investigations done like Colonoscopy, Barium swallow, hormonal assy etc to confirm the cause..
Treatment of the cause can relieve the symptoms..

You can also be advised to take laxatives like Polyethylene glycol [Miralax], castor oil also acts as a lubricant and laxative..
You can also be advised to take Psyllium husk or Lactulose..
Take more fibres in diet, plenty of water and do moderate workout..
You can also be advised medications like Lubiprostone or Linaclotide..
At times to ease up of impacted bowels saline enema can be given to remove the bowels and then the medications are given to ease and regularize bowels..
Also try and inculcate a habit of going to washroom every morning at the same time, although you might not evacuate the bowel but might help in gradually developing the habit by tuning the brain..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
