Suggest Treatment For Cramps In Incision Of Appendectomy

I had my appendix removed about 5 years ago. Over the last year I have noticed that I get something like a charley horse type cramp/contraction in the area of the incision. I work out regularly at a gym and two days ago, during the abdominal portion of my class s workout, I got this unbearable cramp in this area. It felt as if someone s fist was punching out of my intestine. I had to get up out of the exercise we were performing on the ground (lower abs) and stand, doubled over, until the cramping was finished. Now, days later, this area is still sore, and when I use my abdominal muscles to get up from a chair, that area is very tender. I m wondering if I have a hernia that has developed? I m really freaked out about this. I ve exercised regularly my whole life and nothing like this has ever happened. I ve always had strong abdominal muscles, but this area of my abs feels compromised. What should I do? Is there a specific test my family doctor could order for me?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

If there is a recurrent stretch at the appendix scar, I recommend to rule out the underlying separation of muscle or aponeurotic sheath structure.

An MRI of the region is highly recommended for all tissue details.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel,
