Suggest Treatment For Severe Cold

I am suffering from a cold with thick phlegm or mucus which I am having difficulty expelling. It seems my urge or strength to expel the phlegm is not strong enough until a strong , coughing spell all but chokes me and.I then vomit up a good deal of it. It! Thick and sticky but not unusually deep in color which in fact is almost yellowy and transparent except for the chunks. I am 73yoa and suffer from broncitis. Have had cold and cough 10 days. The phellgm situation is getting worse. Have no fever and have been on coricidin and I might as we ll be taking. A placebo. Honey and lemon tea doesn t! Loosen the mucus. And lemon drops aren! doing anything but shriveling my tongue. (Lord knows I have enough shriveling going on at this juncture of my life and don t need a dryer up prune tongue). Maybe soothing my throat a bit but that s it. My eyes are still tearing but. I really am not feeling sick anymore just simply wish the icky-sticky stuff that.makes me gag and vomit would leave. What do you recommend?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

You may want to consider the use of a mucolytic. This is a medication that helps to break down mucus so that it may be more easily expelled.

There are different types including: guifenesin, bisolvan, mucomyst, aeroflux.
You can speak to your local pharmacist to find out which one is available in your area.

In addition, it is important to make sure that you use enough fluids because this would also help to decrease thickness.

I hope this helps
