Suggest Treatment For Weight Loss

My mother is overweight and I am trying to help her lose weight but it is very difficult for her to even walk because of calf pain in both legs. I have her stretch daily and give her a massage once in a while, they feel like they are rock hard, but it isn't muscle tone. Is there anything she or i can be doing for this problem?

Hello dear,

For effective weight control, equal importance should be given to both exercise & diet.

A. As your mother is having calf pain in both legs, it will be advisable to undergo certain tests like Doppler scan of both lower limbs, nerve conduction studies, in addition to basic investigations like complete blood count, estimation of blood pressure, blood sugar, serum electrolytes & lipid profile.
They will be helpful to rule out any pathological cause for the calf pain.
Symptomatic relief can be obtained with heat therapy & physiotherapy+ postural exercises.

B. It is also needed that a low calorie low fat diet be followed such as:

1. Avoid eating white breads, rice and pasta. They have high calories and increases the blood sugar level.
2. It is better to have complex carbohydrates such as whole wheat bread, oatmeal and brown rice.
3. Consume low fat versions of milk and cheese and avoid oily foods.
4. Have a diet rich in low calorie protein foods such as egg whites, skinless chicken, fish, etc.
5. It is better to avoid soft drinks and fruit juices which are rich in calories.
Instead, drink large amount of water (about 6 to 8 glasses) throughout the day.
6. Dietary fiber such as whole grains, vegetables, fruits, and nuts can also be included in the diet.

Wishing her a Good Health.
Take care.
