Taking Atenolol, Lisinopril After Hemorrhagic Thalamic Stroke. How Does Medicine Work?

I m trying to read about what atenolol does, how it accomplishes what it is supposed to do. All I can get when asking the question to WWW.WWWW.WW is a generic description from that web site, but nowhere is there an explanation of what it does, and how it does it. I m taking atenolol, lisinopril , and amlodipine , 5 years post hemorrhagic thalamic stroke . Please tell me where I can get pdr type info to let me know how they force the body to lower B.P. With the meds, I m at 130 - 140 / 85 - 90. Without meds 160 - 180 / 95 - 100. All bottles say dizziness is a side effect. If I turn the corner quickly while walking, I need to reach out for the wall, so as to not begin to lean as if to fall. If I close my eyes in the shower to rinse my hair, I must reach out one arm to stabilize myself. I m assuming my vestibular apparatus has been affected by the stroke, but I do not know if the drugs worsen the balance / dizziness situation. I can ride a bike 10 - 15 miles, 2 - 3 times per week, or swim 100 laps (1 + 1/3 mile) 4 miles a week w/o problems, but make me walk and turn a corner, I must hold on to something. Crazy, hunh? Internal Medicine Specialist 's  Response
Dear Mr. Mickeletto,

Thanks for posting your query on this website. I can fully appreciate your concern for your problem.

1. The reply to your query is simple : you had a stroke due to bleeding in the brain. Bleeding occurred due to rupture of tender arteries in the brain following high blood pressure.

2. Hence, the goal is to prevent recurrence of hemorrhagic stroke- which can be fatal- by maintaining the blood pressure to normal.

3. Medicines used for lowering blood pressure do NOT have any therapeutic effect on the affected part of the brain.

4. All blood pressure medicines that you are taking, keep the blood pressure under control, by relaxing the vessels in the lower limbs, leading to pooling of blood in the lower limbs.

5. As far as dizziness is concerned, it occurs due to momentary lack of blood supply to the brain whenever you change your posture. It is most pronounced when you rise suddenly from a sitting position.

6. Dizziness can be minimized by giving a gap of around 2 hours between atenolol, lisinopril and amlodipine. (Example : take lisinopril at 6AM; amlodipine at 8AM; atenolol at 10AM in any sequence.

I am confident that you will certainly benefit from the advice.

May I assure you that I am always available for your assistance and will try my best to cure your condition to the best of my experience and knowledge.

Please feel free to revert back to me in case of further clarifications, if any.

HAVE A NICE DAY AND A SPEEDY RECOVERY.

Fond Regards,

Dr.(Col) R Karanwal
