HI Mr. Ramanathan,
Thank for choosing HCM, See the over time period varies with nature of orthopedic, injury and operative procedure, normally it takes 4 to six week post-op. period, then if nailing and palting is there then it can be removed between 4 to 6 months (if every thing remains alright ), Of course you can drive or ride motor bike, but I would advise you,, do not take any risk better wait till every think becomes normal, have good day and take care.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. K. Naga Ravi Prasad's  Response
Hi Mr.Ramanathan, thanks for writing to HCM.

Generally, implants (either plates or nails) are not removed from lower limbs upto a minimum of 2 years. This is the time period required for the bones to regain their strength to the preinjury status.

The newer generation nails are mostly inert in nature and will not produce any major problems even if left inside.

Removal of implants at times end in disasters like nail breakage, refracture of bone, infection etc. Even after nail removal, you have to be again on protected weight bearing for a few weeks to months till the bone consolidates.

You can absolutely carry on all activities of daily living including driving without any issues with the nail inside your leg.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
