Took Ciprofloxine For Bladder Infection. Burning, Pain, Frequent Urination Continues. Possibility Of Atrophy Of Vagina. Solution?
My doctor gave me ciprofloxine for a bladder infection. I took it for 5 days. I went to the lab for a urine test about a week later because I still had pain and burning when I urinate, but the urine test came back negative. So I went in to the office and told him that I still had pain and burning a feeling like having to urinate frequently. He has prescribed medication to take for pain three times a day( it turns the urine red.) He did not prescribe this with the first round of cipro. He also gave me another 5 day dose of ciprofloxine. I am 69 years old. I read on the computer that the antibiotic may not work as good because of my age. The doctor said I probably have atrophy of the vagina. What can be done for this if these meds don't work. My doctor is a doctor of internal medicine. Should I go to see a gynecologist?
Your doctor might have noted that the bacteria in your urine are sensitive to ciprofloxacin and therefore have increased the duration of treatment. The medicine which is turning your urine to red color is pyridium and given to decrease symptoms in severe urinary tract infections. This medicine must not be taken for more than two days. Do not worry because it is known to cause red colored urine. Please complete your treatment further with 5 days more of ciprofloxacin. If the urine has come back negative then it is working.
These medicines are working and please do not worry about it. It is better to see a gynecologist only for atrophy of vagina which may cause dryness. This can be treated by applying creams.
Hope this helps
