Vomiting, Diarrhea, Hiccuping, Burping Due To Norwalk Virus. Should I Be Concerned?

My father and the rest if family caught Norwalk virus. His symptoms began late Tuesday an most sever vomiting an diarrhea yesterday. Today things seemed settle and he ate the following: banana toast some rice and some kefir. Later in the evening he started to hiccup and then burping a lot. He took some pepto bismol and within an hour he vomited green liquid. He seems to be resting but I am not sure if I should be concerned re green. This was the first time it was green. He is 89 years old gas history of bleeding ulcer about 5 years ago

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi.

Noted the history about your Father about diarrhea and vomiting due to possible Norwalk virus.
Starting with hiccoughs and burping indicating a possible problem with liver and/or under-surface of diaphragm which on irritation can cause hiccoughs.
Hence I would advise him the following:
Consult a Doctor for further evaluation, exmination and investigations of blood particularly for kidney function, liver functions.
Ultrasongoraphy of abdomen followed by CT scan if needed to get an appropriate diagnosis/
Vomiting of green liquid indicated either the reflux of bile from duodenum to stomach and then out and may be an obstruction in the proximal small intestine causing bile to come out as reflux.
X-ray of abdomen in standing position and other necessary investigations would help to get a possible reason nad if there is any obstruction then he would need hospitalization, intravenous fluids, symptomatic and supportive management till full recovery. If the cause for hiccoughs and burping is found out he needs a treatment for the same.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T Chandrakant,
