Want To Take HIV Test, Suggestion Of 4th Generation Test. Advisable?
I'm looking to get an anonymous HIV test. I've called to companies and I'm confused about the tests. I'm not worried about a recent exposure. I know about the Eliza test and that a positive result is verified by the western blot. However, the last company I talked to said I should get a 4th generation HIV test because it's a much better test. It's very expensive compared to others. I will pay the higher price if it is indeed a better/more accurate test. Please advise.
Hi, Welcome to HCM, In HIV there are many test some are screening test latest one is 4th generation test which tests both antigen and antibody.
4th generation tests are accurate 3-4 weeks after exposure, because this is when the p24 antigen becomes high enough to measure. They claim it to be 99%. A negative result at 28 days requires repeat at 90 days.
If you are not worried about recent exposure than simple 3rd generation is equally good that is after 3 months and if positive needs confirmation by western blot. Hope this helps.
Take care Good Luck. Dr.Akhilesh dubey M.D.
