What Causes A Lump Formation At IV Insertion Site On Wrist?

I just left the hospital. They took out my iv from my wrist. I got home, took the wrap off. All ok. Fell asleep for 15 minutes and the insertion spot is a huge lump and my shirt where my wrist was is soaked in blood. I wrapped my wrist up immediately. Should I be concerned?

Hi,

I can understand your concern for blood spreading under skin on arm after iv insertion.

After reading your query it appears to be bruise over the vein. It is a simple collection of blood due to minor injury to the very fine blood vessels under the skin by the needle during the procedure of blood collection. Due to this blood gets collected and causes reddish to bluish discoloration of skin. It will be changing to blackish color then greenish and then will be fading away in 10 -14 days. You need not do anything for the same.

Small bruise or rash is not at all a thing of worry but in your case as the lump is quite huge so you should reach to the treating doctor immediately. .
