What Causes Abdominal Pains After Total Proctocolectomy And Ileostomy Surgery?

Hi doctor I am a 23 year old guy who just had total proctocolectomy with ileostomy surgery after having ulcerative colitis. I had the operation a month ago and have been experiencing a lot of abdominal pains since with no good relief. I ve tried to watch what i eat and also i was admitted back into hospital to have an x-ray and find out what the problem was, they couldn t find anything like blockages etc. I ve been advised by doctors that it might be wind due to me having laparoscopic surgery, or slight kinkiness in the small bowel and don t seem to have a clear idea. Please doctor what do you feel may be the problem? One week i was vomiting three days in a row and I ve also completely lost my appetite unable to put food down at all. I have an appointment with my surgeon which is going to be our 1st meeting since the op but please do you have any second thoughts? The pain is unbearable

Hi

Thanks for your query.

Noted the history and understood the concerns.
Unbearable pain with vomiting after colectomy and ileostomy can be due to intestinal problem which might not show up on X-ray of abdomen. Hence you need the following in such a situation:
Contrast enhanced CT scan of abdomen with Enteroclysis so that the motility behaviour of intestines, any obstruction or pseudo-obstruction
can be diagnosed and treated accordingly.
Tests of stool for three consecutive days, tests of blood for routine, deficiency of vitamins and electrolytes can help further to see for any metabolic problem as a cause or after-effect and treatment of such things will be helpful for betterment.

Take Care
