Hi,I am Dr. Santosh Kondekar (Pediatrician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My 12 year old son had swelling in his testicles. He had an ultrasound yesterday. The ultrasound indicated a bilateral hydrocele. I haven't gotten to talk to his regular doctor because he has been out of town. Is this common in boys his age and will need surgery to correct this?
Hello. Thank you for your question. Hydroceles in boys this age is common. A discussion with your doctor about this is warranted, though not an emergency. Typically the boys are referred to a urologist. Though some hydroceles resolve on their own with time, some do require surgery. The size of the hydrocele is usually the determining factor. This is something you will likely end up discussing and deciding with a pediatric urologist.
