What Causes Bloody Stool?

I have been on vacation to the Dominican Republic, and had bloody stool while over there. I ended up with an infection, and was treated with Cipro. I no longer have the diarrhoea that I had with the infection, but still am having blood attached to the outsides of my stool. I am wondering if this is serious?
