What Causes Excess Weight Gain When Having Sickle Cell Anemia?

I have sickle cell anemia and until a year ago, I maintained a pretty healthy weight. Over the last year I've gained about 50 pounds. My eating habits haven't changed at all, I'm very upset because now I have more pain because of the excess weight. Is this normal?
