Hello! My mother (57 years old ) had to undergo an emergency exploratory laparotomy due to intestinal blockage. It is a vertical cut in the middle of the abdomen. It all started with severe abdominal pain after which she was not able to pass urine or motions. Today it is 3 weeks since the laparotomy. She still has slight pain in the abdomen on the left side immediately after passing urine. This pain also occurs sometime after having food. She says it seems like gas pain and after some time it goes away. She is totally avoiding proteins cause she feels it is causing gas and pain later on. Kindly advise regarding her diet. I am also concerned because she is still running a fever of 99.6 F in the evenings and has slight cough sometimes. Her wounds have healed completed and the doctor treating has ruled out any infection of the surgical wound. Her blood tests and urine tests have come out normal. So we are wondering which she is still running 1F fever. Medical History: Prior to this when she was 16 years old there was a similar situation when she had to be operated when she says some fibroid growth was removed from the small intestine which was diagnosed as congenital. She s been diagnosed as having osteoporosis from the age of 35.
hi there, post laparotomylow grade fever could be significant of a residual infection or a infective pocket in the abdomen which has localized. It could be detected with the help of an USG scan of the abdomen or an MRI. Some adhesions also form post operatively in the abdomen especially if the indication for the surgery was an infective cause. I suggest you let the treating physician or surgeon look into it and treat it with a course of antibiotics. Take care
