What Causes Foul Smelling Fart And Diarrhea In An Infant Who Has Been Started On Baby Foods?

Hello, I have a 5.5 month old boy who has started having very runny diarrhea like BM's and they smell very foul as well as his gas smelling very foul. Don't know what's causing it. He is bottle fed with rice cereal in the bottles and has been started on baby foods as well.

Hi, Thanks for your query at HCM...
With your history the cause of diarrhea could be infection or food related or bottle feeding. so to rule out infection I would like you to get his stool routine test - if there is bacterial infection then appropriate antibiotics need to be given.
Bottle feeding per say can cause infection so hence advised you to stop bottle feeding.
In any infant when your are introducing solid food there are certain guidelines you should follow, like
1. Start with ragi or wheat - should be like paste or semisolid - start small amounts with increasing frequency
2. Add a new food only after giving the ragi or wheat for 2 weeks so that the infant's stomach is well adjusted to ragi or wheat.
3. If multiple things are started together then it will also cause diarrhea....
To summarize, first stop bottle feeding and then get a stool routine which will help in treating you son better...
