What Causes High Level Of Squamous Epithelial Cells In Urine?
I recently had a urine culture done because I thought I was having uti symptoms but my urinalysis only had trace bacteria in it. Anyhow, I was emailed my results and it says everything is negative except for my squamous epithelial cells, which was 6. I was told to wipe with a towelette before I provided my sample, which I did, so I m wondering what the higher than normal result is from?
Hello Thanks for query. Bladder and Urethral Mucosa are lined by Transitional Epithelial Cells and vagina and genital area round urethral opening are lined by squamous epithelial cells . The presence of squamous cells in urine suggest chronic inflammation of bladder mucosa where transitional epithelial cells gets transformed into squamous epithelial cells.
Hence it is always advised to clean the genital area around urethral opening before collecting urine sample to be given for analysis so as to avoid false positive reporting can be avoided .
