What Causes Itchy Patches On Both Sides Of My Back?

Hello. I have two itchy patches on both sides of my back in the same spot, just below my shoulder blade. There is some hair on this part of my back, but it has been there. It s not as if the hair is growing in. The skin is fairly dry and there are some small red bumps.

Hello,

Itchy patches on the back is commonly indicative of contact dermatitis. It is caused due to direct contact with a substance or allergen that causes a reaction (allergy). It may be a used soap, cosmetic, towel, bed sheet, jewelry, bleach, detergents, pesticides, fertilizers or even plants.

Identify and avoid the factor that causes you the discomfort. You should take care of your hygiene, wash your clothes, towel and bed sheet frequently in hot water. Avoid sharing toiletries. Wear cotton clothes that are loose fitting and avoid addictions if any. Stay in comfortable temperature. Take regular shower and moisturize your skin with olive oil, coconut oil or any good herbal(aloe vera based) moisturizer.

In the meantime, take Fexofenadine (Allegra), an antihistamine, once daily for 3-5 days once daily at bed time. You can apply ointment hydrocortisone in the affected area to get relieve from itching. Do not scratch, avoid sex for a couple of days. If sexually active with multiple partners, get STD test done to rule out STI & herpes simplex infection.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K, General & Family Physician
