What Causes Stomach Discomfort, Alternating Constipation And Diarrhea With Blood And Mucus?

Hi
I am a 36 year old female. I usually experience symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Recently, after eating undercooked chicken in a restaurant I started experiencing stomach disomfort then a few days later I started to have sometimes hard stools and sometimes loose stools with blood and mucus. I went to my doctor who diagnosed my symptoms as being a dysentry infection due to amebiasis (without stool test). After a week of treatment, I went for a colonoscopy and now the biopsy results say that I have Crohn's disease even though I never had any symptmoms. I went back to my family doctor and he was reluctant to accept the result and suggested that it could be a sort of a pseudo-Crohn due to the bacterial infection that I previously had. What should I believe? Could amebiasis cause colon ulcers?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

The alternating diarrhea and constipation in a female of 36 should be seen with suspicion as this may be cancer of the colon as there is blood and mucus in stool.

Hence I would advise you the following in such a situation:
- Get the stool tests and blood routines done and if there is evidence of an infection get a course of an antibiotic and metronidazole and see the results.
- You need a colonoscopy and biopsy in any way and take an appointment for the same. This will be definitive to say whether there is cancer or not.

If there is cancer, then you also need further tests of CT scan and so on under the guidance of Oncologist or Onco surgeon. Once diagnosed the plan of treatment should be followed strictly.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T Chandrakant
