What Causes The 2 Year Old To Look From The Corner Of The Eye?

keratoconus?? My daughter is 2 years and 8 months and she kept looking occassionally out of the corner of her eye but over the past 3 months she now constantly looks out of the corner of her eye. She can move her eye in all directions as normal but she will look head on for 5 mins maximum and after that she will always look from the corner. The only time she looks head on is when watching tv and she is right up close to it. My gp has said this may be keratoconus but there is no bulging. She has been refferred to the eye hospital but i am awaiting an appointment. Do you think this is as my gp said or possibly something else? If so what can i do in the mean time??

Ophthalmologist 's  Response
hi,
I am Dr.Richa Sharma , a pediatric opthalmologist. I understand your concern .Children usually adopt a face turn/ tilt or look from the corner of the eyes( as in your kid's case) in situation in which vision in that particular field of vision is better than the straight gaze. This can happen in many cases.First if all, to ease your worry let me tell you that it can be habitual in some cases. In other cases, it is because of the astigmatic/ cylindrical refractive error or in common language..glass power. keratoconus as you are worried of is a cause of progressive glass power / cylinder power but I doubt is present in your kid's case as she is very young though she can have cylindrical power for which she might require glasses. Most importantly, the reason can be nystagmus ( shaky eye movements) which lead to such problem . As you have not mentioned any such shaky movements in your query..so dont worry. For the time being you get an appointment, just try closing one eye of your kid with an opaque cloth patch for 10 mins and observe if she looks straight. If this doesn't happen and she continues to look in the same way, there is no eye muscle related/ neurological problem. She just might have refractive problem. all D best.Take care
