What Causes The Black Stools After Taking Dulcolax And Have Been Diagnosed With Progressive MS?

I have suffered with heartburns for the last 4 years. This past week, I was constipated and took one dulcolax last night. This afternoon I had a bowel movement with a black stool. I was diagnosed with Second Progressive MS in October 2012. After starting with Rebif, I have had difficulty swallowing every now and then. The doctor took me out of Rebif as it was changing some liver enzimes. I am not taking any MS medication since October 2013, What could be the cause of the black stool?

Hello and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

The most common cause of black stool in absence of associated symptoms like sever abdomen pain and vomiting, fatigue would be diet because of the diet or medicine if ever taken any that causes the color changed of stool may cause also cause the black and to confirm or rule out any systemic illness stool need to be sent for microscopic examination.

Now for the hyperacidity if it is chronic or long standing then it could be GERD (Gastroesophageal reflux disease) and for that I would advise to try Tab Omeprazole with Tab Domperidone once in day and it need to be taken for five weeks, the most important is to rule out the infection (Helicobacter ), other medical history may not be related with this unless it is being clinically correlated.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Akhtarhusain Shaikh
