What Could Be The Clear Liquid Coming From Nose?

Clear Liquid from nose For that past two to three weeks anytime I bend over then stand back up I have clear liquid that comes out of my nose. There is usually a teaspoon or more that comes out. I have not had a cold or allergies or illnesses that cause a runny nose of stuffiness. Other than when this happens my nasal passages seem clear. What could this be and is this something I should see my doctor about?

Dear Patient,

Since you excluded the cold and allergies which normally are the most common causes for clear liquid coming from nose, then I would go more for CSF. This is cerebrospinal fluid that comes out from the nose when there is a hole in the dura-part of the brain. CSF normally surround the brain into the sinuses. There are two reason why this CSF comes out of the nose:
1. Traumatic
2. Spontaneously due to elevated intracranal pressure.

If recently You have had no trauma, nor surgery than most probably is a spontaneously flow which may be result of different reasons that increase the intracranial pressure, which is a kind of pressure that usually people have not heard in their daily life.

You need to check this with your doctor who will normally proceed:
1. Liquid culture
2. Nasal Endoscopy
3. MRI and CT needs to be done also because they reveal the presence of this intracranial increased pressure.

These are the first step to be taken for this moment.

Hope this has been helpful to you, if You need more information, please recontact me.

All the best,
Dr. Eni
