What Could Be The Reason For Popping Knee On Extension Of The Leg And Sharp Pain On Jumping?

My right knee pops when I extend it. If I continue to retract and then extend it again, it doesn't pop. When I run, it really doesn't bother me, but when I am playing basketball and shooting the ball, it's like it' 'pinches' me with a sharp little pain in it. What do you think? Mainly when I am shooting jump shots as I am using my legs to lift when I shoot. Thanks -J
