What Could Cause Pain In Baby's Legs?

My 20 month old grandson woke up this morning and couldn't walk without holding on. It looked like his left leg would give and he fell. It gory better at times during the day, that is he could walk for a few seconds befor falling. He kept holding on to things andit seemed like he was in pain. He can't really talk yet.

hi,

thanks for your question.

there are a number of possibilities as to why yor child cannot walk. the location of his pain which can be determined on careful physical exination often points toward a particular diagnosis.

common reasons for this situation in a child of this age are a toddlers fracture of the shin bone, a reactive arthritis in the knee or hip joint becuSe of a viral infection. there are many other causes.

following a physical examination I would usually investigate with X-rays of the affected area, ultrasound of the affected joints, blood work, bone scan and or MRI scan as dictated.

best wishes
