What Could Cause Severe Pain In The Knees And Shin On Training One Month After Recovery From Knee Overuse Injury?

I'm a gymnast, and I train a lot of hours each week. I had a knee overuse injury before, and after that I couldn't do gymnastics for a month. I'm finally back now, and I trained today, and I feel the most severe pain I have ever felt in both knees and my right shin. It hurts right now, and it also hurts just to stand up. What's happening to me?

Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

I suspect that you could have strained the soft tissues around the knee joint owing to sudden unaccustomed physical activity. The pain in the right shin could a due to shin splints which is also a form of overuse injury.

I suggest you to "gradually" increase your level of physical training so that your muscles and ligaments gets adjusted and toned properly. Abruptly starting and vigorous levels of physical activity will always ends in painful soft tissues.

Apply ice to the painful area and then after activities. Ice will help calm the inflammatory response and stimulate blood flow to the area.

Before activities, gentle heating can help loosen the muscle. Apply a heat pack to the painful area prior to stretching or exercising. As a general rule of thumb, remember to heat before an activity and ice afterwards.

Gentle local massaging of the painful areas with a painkiller cream will provide good immediate relief.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
