There are many causes for popping sound, ranging from normal joint sounds to pathological sounds of ligament avulsion. In your case, it appears to be a normal sound, as it is not associated with immediate loss of function and severe pain.
Pain you are having is because of micro tears in your muscle and tendons along with accumulation of lactic acid in your thigh and hip muscles, such type of pain usually lasts for 3-4 days and gradually weans off on its own. You can take over the counter painkillers if you feels like, you can resume exercise whenever you feel comfortable to, there is no contraindication for the same.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
