What Does Postvoid Residual In The Urinary Bladder With Thickening Wall Indicate In Ultrasound Scan ?

I had a cyst removed from my right ovary. After surgery I was bleeding when I would urinate. I experienced pain when urinating to the point I was crying and holding on to anything I could in the bathroom. The Dr. told me I didn t have a UTI when she ran a culture then a week later she called to let me know the culture came back (enterococcus faecalis). I finished the antibiotic she prescribed 7 days later. Still have pain. It seems to be coming from the bladder. She ordered an ultrasound and let know it was normal. Doesn t explain why I have pain. The ultrasound findings were: small postvoid residual in the urinary bladder with a question of very slight thickening of the bladder wall, but was somewhat under distended both on pre and post void image. What does this mean?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Ultrasound scan means there is an infection in urinary bladder (may be urinary catheter induced or other cause) due to which there is reactionary thickening of the wall. Bladder cannot empty fully due to compromised functioning giving rise to post void residual in bladder.

Guidelines for better recovery:
• Consume plenty of liquids as possible
• Continue antibiotics, anti-inflammatory agents as per advise
• Keep genitals clean and dry
• Avoid exposure to excess heat
• Avoid smoking or alcohol
• In our clinic, we also recommend cranberry sachets and urinary alkalizers, anti-inflammatory agents with vitamin C supplements to get faster results
• Once urine culture has become negative and then symptoms persist then should get evaluated for further depth to rule out any iatrogenic problem occurred during removal of the cyst.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel
