Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am a Social Worker and one of my clients is a 5 year old taking Cytra-2. She is medically fragile, g-tube fed and ventilator dependent. She also has static Encephalopathy with trach dependence. Working on care plan, looked up Cytra -2 and it said it is used to prevent acid in the urine, however, there is no mention in the plan that my client is having issues with acid in her urine.
Hi ! Good morning. I am Dr Shareef answering your query.
It is not necessary that your client who is trach dependent, on ventilator and g-tube fed would have a clear cut urinary problem for starting a unrine alkaliser like Cytra - 2. Possibly she is also not ambulatory due to these problems. Urine alkalinisation is necessary for excreting many unwanted minerals and even bacteria which make the urine more acidic, and also thrive more in an acidic medium. This is a complication any non ambulatory bed ridden patients do get not infrequently , and possibly the Cytra- 2advised to her by the doctor is both for relieving her from the symptoms of an acidic urine and as a preventive measures against possible urinary deposits and infections.
Thanks and take care.
