What Is The Burning Sensation In Mouth And Tongue When Diagnosed With GERD?

I have been diagnosed with GERD and LPR in January. I am on Dexilant 60mg for this since March 4th. Last 4 days I am experiencing bad burning senation in mouth and tongue and gums plus very bad bitter taste that is driving me crazy. Nothing to stop burning or taste helps. I have burning pain in throat and sometimes in stomach chest area. Could this be the acid traveling up my throat into the mouth? Does this ocurr with this GERD. I am panicky because taste is all day and burns to. Please clarify and let me know if this is part of GERD and what can I do to cease the burning and awful taste. Hope you can clarify what this can be. Can I be allergic to Dexilant?

Welcome to healthcare magic for your health concerns
I am Dr Fahim and I will looking into your problem

I have gone through your question and understood your concerns. In GERD there is dysfunctioning of the lower esophageal sphincter; its tone decreases resulting in reflux of the stomach content which is acidic into esophagus, pharynx and mouth, resulting in burning sensation in the chest and bitter taste in mouth. You are started with Dexilant 60mg which is a proton pump inhibitor, it causes decrease in acid secretion of the stomach and continued for 8 weeks. If this medical treatment does not help, then there is role of surgery with operation called hissen fundoplication; strengthening the lower esophageal sphincter to prevent reflux. You also need some life style modifications which are very important in GERD management and often neglected both by patient and physician. These are weight reduction, quit smoking, avoid excessive caffeine consumption and large meals especially at night, and have modest degree of head up tilt of your bed. I am confident that these precautions will help you, and your GERD will subsided with conservative treatment in matter of weeks. Feel free to ask if you have any further doubts.
