Hello
Welcome in H.C.M.
I have gone through your query regarding loss of smell sensation even after use of steroid ad anti allergy treatment.
I would like to tell you that olfactory mucosa is situated at the roof of our
nasal cavity and from where smelling fibers crosses the cribriform plate to
olfactory bulb (part of brain). For perception of smell there should be-
1- Adequate air should reach up to olfactory mucosa- so any nasal pathology
leads to obstruction to air flow will disturb smelling mechanism.
2- Olfactory mucosa should have enough water for dissolution of air to stimulate
the olfactory mucosa. Therefore diseases which causes dryness in nose like
Atrophic Rhinitis always develops loss of smell.
3- Diseases causes
atrophy of nasal mucosa as in Atrophic Rhinitis will damage
the smell sensitive mucosa of nose result in loss of smell.
4- Accidental damage to olfactory system.
In your case there is no response to
steroids and anti allergic indicates it is not an allergic phenomenon but is something else which may be diagnosed by thorough examination and necessary investigations, than after it can be treated.
Regards.
