Hi, Doctor. I am female, 36 years old and have an 4 year old daughter. I found hyperthyroidism through blood test 4 weeks ago. I am on Neo-Mercazole (3 tablets per day and each tables is 5mg) for my hyperthyroidism for 2 and half weeks, My thyroid result T3 back to normal and T4 almost back to normal (normal number is 20 I ve got 21). My GP kept checking my blood to monitor the White Cell Count and She told my my white cell droped to 3.9 yesterday and told my to stop the medicine. I didn t feell anything. I am happy with the treatment result and I can feel my energy level is much better after taking the medicine. What should I do now?

Hello,

Neo-Mercazole is a anti-thyroid agent that it can cause lower white blood count. It is rare but if serious compilation of this medicine with a prevalence of 0.1 to 0.5 percent. If you have low white blood count with this medicine, use of the other drug is contraindicated due to risk of cross-reactivity. I support your doctor advice to stop the medicine when you developed to low white blood count because morbidity and death from serious infection can occur. In this case your doctor may give you another choice of therapy such as radioactive iodine or surgery. Talk to your doctor for the option therapy for you.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
