What Will Happen If Taking Bcp For Irregular Periods Be Stopped?

i turned 50 july 2013.
i've been on bcp for about 7 years because of irregular periods.
also have a couple of small ovarian cysts.
my gynecologist of 20 years unexpectantly retired 1/1/14 & i am on last pack of bcp.
i am researching for a new gynecologist but, will most likely run out of bcp before i find someone nw i like or am able to get an appointment.
i would like to get off bcp but, don't know what to expect.
is it safe to stop at end of pack?

It is safe at your age to stop the pills, and you can expect to have some irregular bleeding after you stop the pack. You may also develop hot flashes, night sweats and other menopausal type symptoms. These are not dangerous, but they can be very uncomfortable. Once you find a new doctor, you can discuss with him/her whether or not you should try hormone replacement, restart the birth control, or just let nature take its course and wait for menopause.
