Is It Safe To Work Out With Pre Diabetes?

Hi, I was told today that my metabolic test came back with all good numbers in labs, since I began with wanting to know my results for hormones, and weight gain for the last 4-5 years. I was told that I would need a test that I would not require fasting (AIC) to get a better read. My glucose was 124. I have never been high before, however, I am now 50, and this is definitely hereditary all sisters are on oral meds, and mother is on insulin. I have been very careful all of my life, but menopause and being 0 in progesterone, has me up about 40-50 pounds. I am 5'11" in 207. Just want to know how to work with pre-diabetes, and I have always been a more healthy minded person and work out, just can not shed the extra pounds. Will be seeing a dietician if my AIC reveals the Pre-diabetes. thanks,

Hello, your current test, if fasting, indicates you do have pre-diabetes according to ADA and it no longer has to be verified by a second test. In fact, a fasting blood glucose greater than 126 is now diagnostic of diabetes if the blood sample was fasting. Was your 124 fasting? Pre-diabetes is treated in a similar fashion as diabetes. Follow a balanced diet low in high-glycemic carbohydrates, get daily exercise, get rid of the sugar in your diet and follow through with seeing a dietitian so she can help you get on a plan to try to prevent your heriditary propensity towards developing diabetes. I hope this helps . . .Kathy Shattler, MS,RDN
