Brief Answer:
SJS is dermatogical emergency.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your question on Healthcare Magic.
I can understand your concern.
SJS (Steven jhonson syndrome) is considered as dermatological emergency.
In this condition, cell death causes the epidermis to separate from the dermis.
There is no specific cause for this. But many studies believe immune etiology behind this.
This kind of immune reaction can be triggered by infection, malignancy and drugs.
Most common infection causing this is mycoplasma infection. Common drugs causing this are antibiotics (sulpha drugs) and Lamotrigine (anti epileptic).
So avoidance of triggering factors is the key to prevent SJS.
Treatment is mostly targeted on prevention.
But if acute episode is there then this should be treated as acute emergency. Intravenous fluids, pain killers and other supportive drugs are mainstay of treatment.
Intravenous steroids can be tried in some cases.
So for your friend, main thing is prevention of triggers.
Hope I have solved your query. I will be happy to help you further. Wishing good health to your friend. Thanks.
