Abdominal Distension, Vomiting, Sweating, Acute Pain, No Bowel Sounds After Bowel Resection Operation. Need To Be Worried?

Hi, my husband had a bowel resection operation and two days later had symptoms such as grossly distended abdomen, vomiting 300ml of green bile, sweating, confusion, acute pain and burning, and no bowel sounds. He was left for a further 3 days before being admitted to ICU .. i am just confused as to why it took so long for them to admit him as i, obviously, am not a doctor but the symptoms would to me have suggested something was seriously wrong. thank you .. nicole

HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

After abdominal surgery , ileus can occur. Ileus is a disturbance with the normal ability of the gastrointestinal tract to contract or propel food and liquids.

When it occurs after surgery it is called postoperative ileus. There are different factors that cause it.It would cause the bloating, pain , vomiting and lack of bowel sounds.

Normally it resolves after 3 days , if it persists beyond this time, it is called paralytic ileus.
The doctors may have thought that it would have resolved by day 3.

You should discuss your concerns with his doctors.

I hope this helps
