Bacteria Infection In Left Artificial Knee, Taken Amoxicllian And Other Caps. Is This Harmful?

I had a bacteria infection in the left artificial knee. This happened 24 hours after dental cleaning. Amoxicllian was taken before the procedure. I now have an IV in my left arm and administer Cefepime every 12 hours. I ve been doing this since October 6,2013. I am to doing this and taking Lactinex til November . Is this too much antibiotics to be on for the time ?

Infectious Diseases Specialist 's  Response
Hi,
Welcome to HCM.
Bacterial infection of knee is called infective osteoarthritis. Antibiotics play a very important role here. They have to be started as soon as possible and the antibiotics are continued for longer period to clear the infection completely. If antibiotics are given orally then they can be given up to 6 weeks. IV antibiotics can be given for 4 weeks.
Synovial fluid culture and sensitivity after therapy can be done to confirm good response to therapy.

Thanks.
