Can Mosquito Repellants Cause Harm To Baby?

Hello doctor,

I have a 1-1/4 year old baby. I would like to know whether using mosquito repellants, be it any form, can cause any health harzards? We never used such things, but now mosquitoes are a big problem in our home (though the house and the premises are kept clean) and the different varieties of fevers in the news is leading me to think of using repellants.

Hi Soumya,

Thank you for your query on Healthcare Magic.

Before applying you should keep in mind that any cream may cause allergic skin rashes with application.

So apply the cream a little bit around the back of ear and observe for any rash, irritation, swelling, or itching.

If the child develops any cold or cough due to the smell, avoid applying.

If there are no these symptoms you can proceed for application.

Avoid applying to hands, face, and to the parts which child have a habit of putting in mouth.

Try to apply for a shorter periods especially during sleep.

Use mosquito nets which are safe.

Hope I have answered your query.

Regards.
