Child. Broken Blood Vessel Kind Of Things Under The Skin, Near Elbow. Serious? Due To Low Platelets?

My 8 year old daughter has something that looks like broken blood vessels under the skin, it kind of sounds like this:

These grouped dotted lesions look like petechiae, that is minute bleed in skin. It is at the site of trauma (elbow) and hence can be due to low platelet.

Is this something I should take her into the doctor's office for?

Hi,

Thank you for your query.

What you describe appear to be petechiae which need to be investigated. Necessary blood tests for coagulation and bleeding profile needs to be done. In case there is history of injury (as you mention trauma) then an examination by an orthopedic surgeon with x-ray of the region would be required.

It is very difficult to tell about the seriousness of the problem without an examination.

I hope I have answered your query to your satisfaction.

Wishing your daughter all the best.

Dear user,

This may be due to local trauma and her platelet counts may be normal! However, a visit to the doctor is still indicated as he/she will make sure there is no serious problem. I would have loved to take a paid query from you as that may have enabled you to send me the pictures of the rash.

In any case, if her general health is normal, don't fret a lot. Do see her doctor within the next few days, though.

Hi,

Thank you for your query on Healthcare Magic.

After trauma, there will be bruising around the area due to rupture of small blood vessels and capillaries.

If there is low platelet count, there will be petechiae spontaneously or with minimal trauma.

Consult the pediatrician for physical examination and for investigations with CBP, platelet count, and coagulation profile.

Hope I have answered your query.

Regards.
