Child Has Chronic Cough With Wheezing, Cold And Runny Nose. Should I Give Omnacortil?
My 3 yr old daughter has a chronic cough associated with wheezing since 4 months. She is on Budesinoid and Salbutomol spray pump. Presently she developed cold and running nose . I gave her T-minic syrup of 3.5 ml, thrice a day. (she is about 11 kgs). Since yesterday her cold is much better, but she has developed coughing. The last time around, when the same symptoms appeared, I was advised Omnacortil 5mg/5ml syrup, thrice a day, for 5 days. Should I repeat the same now ? Please advise.

Thank you for your query.
Cough post cold can be due to post nasal drip.
Omnacortil is only advised during severe wheeze in a known asthmatic.Never start it without a doctors precription.
Cough in a child can be due to various reasons.
Please let a doctor auscultate the chest and make a diagnosis of the cough.The medication will follow his diagnosis.Till then you can give your child a nasal decongestant.
Consult your doctor if the problem persists.

Please do not give any medication without the advise of the treating paediatrician. Not all cases of cough require omnacortil (steroid). It would be best if the doctor examines her chest and then decides.
In the meantime, try steam inhalation. Probably you can also do steam inhalation along your daughter, as it is not safe to leave a child to do steam inhalation without supervision. Please be careful while doing the same.
Do give her warm water to drink at regular intervals. Half a glass or so every one or two hours.
