Child Has Redness Between Thighs, Reddish Penis And Testicles, Swollen Penis, Painful. Diaper Rash?

Hello my son is 13 months old and I noticed some redness between the thighs which I assumed to be diaper rash. However as I tried changing his diaper and bathing him he was literally shacking and screaming not wanting to open his legs I assumed his bottom was really irritated however I noticed his penis and ball sack where redish as well and the head of his penis looked to be swollen on the side or maybe a small knot forming but it was very painful for him. Should I be concerned that this is more than just a diaper rash.

Hi and thank you for this query.

Am sorry to hear about what your son is experiencing.

From the information you have provided, it could be a diaper rash but the extend of this inflammation, the pains and extensive nature warrant that you get consulted to get this child examined. For now, continue changing the diaper as often as possible to get the area as dry as possible. You mat also give some pain medication in the period leading up to the consultation for pain relief. Depending on the findings, adequate and adapted treatment options would be proposed to you.

hope this helps. Wish him a speedy recovery.

Pediatrician Dr. Y V Siva Sankara Murty's  Response
Hi,

Thanks for writing to health care magic.
I can understand your concern.
Your child needs to be examined by a doctor. If it is confirmed that it is diaper rash then zinc containing creams will be of use. Do not continue to use the same diaper after it is soiled. Change diaper frequently. Avoid using diaper whenever possible and leave it open to air. First other diagnosis which can present in a similar fashion should be ruled out by physical examination.
Continue to ask further queries as required.
Hope this helps.
Take care.
