Child Having A Soft Spot After A Fall. Anything To Be Worried?

Our grandson fell on his head about a week or so ago and I noticed the other night that he had a large squishy place on his head when rubbing his head. I was very concerned about it, but his mommy and daddy didn't seem to be. He has been acting fine - normal - eating, playing, etc., but my husband said that he had noticed it today and it was a pretty big area - still feels the same as I described the other night. Should we be concerned?

Hi grandma:

It sounds like a hematoma. If he has already been checked by the doctor, and continues to act normal, you only have to wait for the hematoma to reabsorb.

Whenever a baby falls and hits his or her head, call your doctor for advice. This is the safest thing to do, even if the infant appears to have no serious injuries. Most children with mild head injuries have an excellent prognosis with a very low risk of long-term complications. However, infants may be more likely to have complications because their brains have not finished growing.
