Hit On The Shin, Bump In The Spot, Bad Pain. Solution ?

I got hit with a softball on my shin just over a week ago. It bruised and then my foot started bruising. Yesterday my shin started hurting when I was inactive and I noticed a bump in the spot that was hit that was not there before. The pain is pretty bad no matter what my activity level. I am wondering if I need to have this checked out?

Orthopaedic Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,
Thanks for writing to us,

It looks like there is contusion on tibia. you need supportive crepe bandage or tubigrip.
Take analgesic and anti-inflammatory to reduce swelling and bruse.
You need to take rest and ice fomentation.
If not relieved then x ray may be required.
I hope that I have answered your query. Let me know if I can help you further. Take care

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. K. Naga Ravi Prasad's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

Based on the given description, I suspect that you could have suffered a sub-periosteal hematoma (blood clot under the outer layer of bone) which will be very painful even at rest.

The general measures of treatment include -
* rest to the injured part to allow time to heal
* Ice packing over the area to alleviate the pain
* Elastic compression bandage around the area to limit the spread of swelling
* limb elevation
* Use of antiinflammatory medicines like Advil or Aleve to reduce pain and inflammation.

If it is bothering you much, consult an orthopedic surgeon for further management.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
