Should I Take My Son To ER Due To Diarrhea And Vomiting? Could This Be Rotavirus Or Gastroenteritis?

Hi my two and a half year old son has diarrhea and vommitting for two days. It has a very smelly odor. I'm very concerned because it hasn't stopped, he ate very little and drank some fluids. His pediatrician recommended I monitor him for any sign of dehydration. He has a rash that is very painful near his rectum, for which I'm using aquaphor which was recommended by his pediatrician. Do you think I should take him to the ER and Could this be the rotavirus or gastroenteritis.

Hi, thank you for writing to HCM. This is a case of gastrienteritis and its causes are either infectious (bacteria, viruses, parasirtes) or non infectious. If I were the one treating your child, I would carry out a proper assessment and some lab investigations to be sure of the cause. It is true that rotavirus infection is more frequent in children but other causes have to be eliminated.
I hope I have answered your query
I wish you good health
