What Causes Low Grade Fever With Diarrhea?

my 4 year old son last wednesday started with what appeared to be stomach virus he had a low grade fever vomited once with soft bowl movements which was not constant. Day 2 no vomit bad smelling gas no diarrhea but a lot of soft pieces of stool in the toilet. the three and 1/2 days low grade fever with diarrhea. days 6,7,&8 normal bowl movements and his last one tonight with some type of a clear discharge. Stool culture negative and also negative for rotavirus. Any ideas what my be going on?
